Publishing on February 18th, 2020, this women in horror anthology boasts both disturbing content and succinct writing from 21 talented authors.
We all know a strange girl. We either are one or we hold one fondly near to us. We might even know of one that we don’t quite have the courage to befriend yet; and maybe that’s a good thing, considering this collection celebrates both angels and demons in the female form.
The tone of this anthology is what will strike you first. It’s incredibly serious. Not stuffy, not rigid. Serious. These are stories that were written professionally and profoundly. Their tones never really reach a lighthearted pitch, either. The common mood is solemn, sinister, and morbid. It was such a delight to discover new voices that sincerely left a mark with their sharp-cut words and colorful worlds. The horror genre cross-breeding was riveting; you get creature features, psychological terror, body horror, classic frights, mythological takes, and much more.
This is one of the strongest anthologies I’ve read, so far. Each story is resilient. None feel out of place among the others, nor does any story rely on the coupling to be engaging. Every author’s style is succinct but their quirks are visible. Strange Girls is an impressive, sophomore publication and wonderful mirror to reflect the thousands of horror stories told from the male gaze.
