Today me and writing friend Gillian Wright travelled over to Undercliffe Cemetery for the first writing class led by Irene Lofthouse, ‘Stories in Stone’ – located in and inspired by the wonderful architecture/history/life stories/tombs/flora and fauna of Undercliffe.

We had a walk around the main promenades and studied names and styles of stones- Undercliffe, Irene told us, at its height in the late nineteenth century, had employed 22 stone masons on site which along with the horses pulling the funeral carriages and the flow of visitors would have made for a busy, active, noisy cemetery abuzz with life- nothing like we experience today when we go round.
